Malawi and Mozambique declare a state of national disaster due to drought

Lilongwe (INA) - Today, Wednesday (April 13, 2016), Malawi, located in southeastern Africa, declared a state of national disaster due to the severe shortage of food stocks due to the escalation of drought that struck the southern parts of the country, while Mozambique issued a red alert due to the same phenomenon. The President of the Republic of Malawi, Peter Mutharika, said, in a statement published by the BBC, that some citizens in several regions have been in need of aid throughout the current year. "It is very clear that we have a food shortage in the country, which will affect a large number of our citizens," Mutharika added. On the other hand, the State of Mozambique raised the alert levels in the regions located in the south and center of the country to red, which is the highest warning level warning of an emergency or a national disaster. The World Food Program has warned that more than 10 million people across southern Africa will need food assistance over the next year. Malawi recently suffered severe floods and a drought, which led to a hit on the main maize crop, on which the country depends for food. The El Nino climate phenomenon is the main cause of the drought that strikes these African countries and regions. (End) Zaa / Qena
