Pakistan and Iran agree to enhance trade and economic relations for the development and prosperity of the peoples of both countries

Islamabad (UNA/Pakistan News Agency) - Pakistan and Iran have agreed to strengthen trade and economic relations and increase commercial activities in the border areas for the development and prosperity of the peoples of the two countries.

This came during a joint press conference held by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi at the Prime Minister’s Office in the capital, Islamabad, today.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the two countries decided to focus on making their common border a center for commercial activities, and stated that the two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in trade, economy, investment, security, culture and diplomacy. Shehbaz Sharif praised the depth of relations between Pakistan and Iran, and stressed the importance of President Syed Ibrahim Raisi’s visit. He said that it is the first visit by any head of state to Pakistan after the formation of the new government in Pakistan as a result of the general elections held on February 8.

For his part, President Sayed Ibrahim Raisi said that the two countries want to increase bilateral trade to 10 billion dollars annually, and stressed the need to strengthen border markets. He added that the two countries can enhance cooperation between them in combating terrorism and reducing organized crime and smuggling.

In the regional context, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated Iran’s strong position towards Gaza, and said that the United Nations Security Council resolution on Palestine is being violated, and called for raising voices in all international forums until a ceasefire in Gaza. Regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, Shehbaz Sharif said that Kashmiris are facing gross humanitarian violations, the worst kind of atrocities and persecution.

In turn, President Sayed Ibrahim Raisi said that the United Nations and the UN Security Council failed to fulfill their responsibilities, and added that the peoples of the entire world call for an end to the persecution and brutality against the Palestinian people.
