Rabat (UNA) – The Director General of the Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA), Professor Mohammed bin Abdulrab Al-Yami, affirmed that Jerusalem represents a global symbol of peace and coexistence, stressing the need for concerted media, educational, political and diplomatic efforts to enhance the status of the holy city and protect its historical and cultural identity.
During his participation in the panel discussion “Jerusalem: A Global Narrative of Peace,” organized by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency in Rabat on Monday, June 22, 2026, Al-Yami explained that the media plays a pivotal role in consolidating the narrative of peace related to Jerusalem, highlighting the importance of showcasing Jerusalem’s role in bringing peoples closer together and promoting dialogue among followers of the Abrahamic religions.
He pointed to the need for continuous monitoring of Israeli violations against Jerusalem, its residents and holy sites, and to demonstrate their violation of international law and the historical and legal status, stressing the importance of allocating more space to the issue of Jerusalem in international media agendas.
He also explained that new media and social media platforms have become influential tools in shaping global public opinion, calling for the production of multimedia digital content about Jerusalem and peace, and for communication with companies operating digital platforms to address the challenges facing Palestinian content.
Al-Yami stressed the importance of employing cultural and creative industries, especially cinema, to serve the narrative of Jerusalem as a city of tolerance and cultural harmony, noting that producing international artistic works about Jerusalem from a peace perspective would enhance the presence of this narrative at the international level.
He stressed the importance of utilizing artificial intelligence applications to spread knowledge about Jerusalem, its history and cultural status, proposing the development of a multilingual smart model that provides interactive content about the holy city, in addition to creating a global award for media and artistic works that highlight Jerusalem from a cultural and human perspective.
He explained that the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) gave special attention to the issue of Jerusalem by opening its first external office in Ramallah in 2025, with the aim of enhancing media coverage of Palestine and Jerusalem.
He also noted the launch by the Union, in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the media guide to the terms of the Palestinian cause, stressing that this initiative aims to correct the terms in circulation and to counter the narratives that seek to distort the historical and legal facts related to Palestine and Jerusalem.
He added that the Union honored the Palestinian News and Information Agency “WAFA” with the “UNA” Award for Media Professionalism in recognition of its efforts in conveying the reality of the situation in Palestine to the world.
Al-Yami pointed to the importance of developing curricula that promote the concept of Jerusalem as a bridge for understanding between civilizations and religions, calling for the preparation of an international educational framework on Jerusalem and peace in cooperation with international organizations concerned with education and culture, in addition to creating specialized academic programs in Jerusalem studies.
He stressed that Jerusalem represents a fundamental axis in the project of an independent Palestinian state, explaining that the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital does not only serve the Palestinians, but also contributes to preserving an important part of the shared human memory and consolidating the foundations of peace and coexistence.
He also praised the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution, leading to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the region.
The Director General of UNA praised the historic role of the Kingdom of Morocco in supporting the Palestinian cause, noting the chairmanship of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of the Al-Quds Committee, and the efforts made by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Al-Sharif Agency in serving the holy city and strengthening the resilience of its people.
Al-Yami announced the Union’s readiness for full cooperation in implementing the initiatives and programs that emerge from the panel discussion, in a way that contributes to supporting Jerusalem and enhancing its status as a global symbol of peace and coexistence.
