Tariq Bakhit: Muslim women’s issues top the agenda of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation

Jeddah (UNA) - The Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Social and Family Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakhit, reviewed the presence of women in the decisions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation between legislation and implementation, stressing that the organization, since the adoption of its founding charter, considers Muslim women’s issues to be among the most important issues on its agendas. her job.

This came during his participation on Wednesday (November 8, 2023) in the work of the International Conference on Islam, organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the city of Jeddah.

During his intervention in the third working session, “Muslim Women in the Gulf, Arab, and Islamic Framework,” Bakhit provided an overview of the development of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s efforts to empower Muslim women, and the most important axes and activities that it has implemented throughout its history in the educational, cultural, social, humanitarian, political, and economic fields for the benefit of empowering Muslim women.

He referred to the “OIC Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women (OPAO)” which was adopted by the second session of the Women’s Conference held in Cairo on November 24-25, 2008, and was revised at the sixth session of the Ministerial Conference on Women held in Istanbul on November 1-3, 2016, which is considered An integrated road map for the advancement of women in Muslim societies.

He explained that the organization's continuous efforts to empower women resulted in the establishment of the Women's Development Organization, in addition to a significant number of specialized and branching bodies affiliated with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, most of which devote important parts of their work programs to Muslim women's issues and rights, and programs for empowering them and developing their role in Muslim societies.

The conference concluded its work on Wednesday evening after three days of deliberations that witnessed five working sessions during which ministers, officials, scholars and thinkers discussed various issues related to women in the Islamic world.
