The decline of the tourism sector in Mozambique

Maputo (INA) - The growth of the tourism sector in Mozambique decreased by 4.1 percent between 2011 and 2013, due to the violence of political and military conflicts that rocked the center and north of the country, according to official sources. According to the Secretary-General of the Professional Federation of the Tourism and Hotels Sector, Louis Makwajkwa, the contribution of this sector to the gross domestic product decreased to 7.9 percent, compared to 12 percent in 2011. Luis Makuajkwa expressed optimism that tourism will return to normal in Mozambique, thanks to the recent peace agreement signed by the two rival political parties in the country. The figures showed that the Federation of Hotel and Tourism Industry provided about 52 thousand jobs in 2013, i.e. an increase in the number of jobs by nearly seven thousand jobs during the past year.
