Jeddah (INA) – The President of the Arab States Broadcasting Union, Muhammad Al-Awash, revealed today in Jeddah that the union intends to hold an intensive workshop in Tunisia in the first week of next April to develop an Arab-Islamic media vision to confront the discourse of the phenomenon of violence and terrorism and the distortion of the image of Islam. The International Islamic News Agency (INA) quoted Al-Awash as saying that the workshop, which will be held in coordination with the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, will witness the participation of member states of the Union, the Union of Islamic Broadcasting, civil society organizations and academics. He stressed that the workshop will develop the appropriate vision and perception to confront the phenomenon of extremism and terrorism and distort the image of Islam by linking the practices of extremist terrorist groups to the Islamic religion. And he indicated that the holding of this workshop comes from the Union's awareness of the stage the region is going through with regard to the growing phenomenon of terrorism and extremism. Al-Awash touched on the existence of many challenges facing Arab and Islamic countries, which require activating the role of the media in confronting them. In this regard, he stressed the responsibility of the Arab and Islamic media in defining the tolerance of Islam and that it is a religion of moderation. He said, "We are aware of the nature of the dangers and the fierce attack that the Arab and Islamic nations and the Islamic religion are exposed to from hostile media at the present time, which requires intensified efforts by Arab and Islamic bodies and organizations to confront them." This came during his meeting today in Jeddah with the Director General of the Union of Islamic Broadcasting affiliated to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Mohamed Salem Weld Bouk, during which an executive program agreement was signed to activate the joint media cooperation agreement between the two unions. Al-Awash explained that the agreement aims to frame joint cooperation between the two federations in many fields. He pointed out that one of the most prominent areas of cooperation mentioned in the agreement is the promotion and exchange of experiences and visits between the two federations, and the holding of joint workshops, committees and media weeks between them. In turn, the Director General of the Islamic Broadcasting Union confirmed that the meeting discussed aspects of cooperation between the two unions, which have a membership relationship, since all members of the Arab States Broadcasting Union are members of the Islamic States Broadcasting Union. Weld Bouk emphasized that the two unions have common goals that are in the interest of the member states in producing and exchanging joint programs and training. (End) Zayed Sultan Al-Bakari
