On World Environment Day 2026… The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission calls for climate justice and the protection of the right to a healthy environment

Jeddah (UNA) – The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) affirmed that protecting the environment and promoting climate justice are fundamental pillars for safeguarding human rights and achieving sustainable development in light of the escalating environmental challenges facing the world and their increasing impact on human life, dignity, and well-being.

The organization stressed that many member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, despite their limited contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation, are among the most affected by climate-related disasters, including droughts, floods, desertification, water scarcity and food insecurity, challenges that threaten the livelihoods and well-being of millions of people across the Islamic world.

The commission also affirmed that the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is fundamental to the realization of basic human rights, including the rights to life, health, food, water, housing and development.

The commission stressed the importance of climate justice through the adoption of fair global measures based on the principles of justice and common responsibilities, including strengthening international solidarity, providing climate finance, transferring technology, and supporting developing countries and those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The Authority called on the international community and the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to strengthen joint efforts to protect the environment, build capacity to cope with the effects of climate change, and preserve human dignity and the rights of present and future generations, in a way that contributes to achieving sustainable development and consolidating security, stability and prosperity for all.
