Islamabad (UNA/APP) – Pakistan called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2803 on a ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the importance of ensuring unimpeded humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip, achieving a permanent ceasefire, and launching a time-bound political process leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, speaking at a Security Council debate on the situation in the Middle East, said that the 2025 ceasefire agreement and US President Donald Trump’s comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza provided a significant opportunity to alleviate human suffering and advance a credible path towards the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood. However, he added that the delay in the full implementation of these efforts necessitates urgent action. He further stated that adherence to the peace plan and Security Council Resolution 2803, which endorsed it, is of paramount importance, warning that failure to act now could irreparably undermine the prospects for a just and lasting peace.
The Pakistani representative noted that the ceasefire and the implementation of some provisions of the peace plan had contributed to a limited improvement in the situation in the Gaza Strip. However, 59 percent of the population still faces critical levels of food insecurity, and more than 1100 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire came into effect. This raises questions about the full and faithful implementation of the plan. Asim Iftikhar Ahmed called for an immediate halt to all settlement activities and rejected any attempts to annex territory, forcibly displace people, or alter the demographic and geographic character of the occupied Palestinian territory, in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions. Regarding regional developments, the Pakistani representative expressed Pakistan's deep concern about the recent developments that have escalated tensions in the region. He reiterated his country's unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region, calling on all parties to exercise restraint, take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation, and fulfill their obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He affirmed that Pakistan will continue to support all efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region through dialogue and diplomatic means.
