UNESCO condemns the vandalism of many mosques in Tripoli

Paris (INA) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has condemned the barbaric vandalism that many mosques in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, have recently been subjected to, and called for the protection of Libyan heritage. UNESCO indicated, in a statement, that three mosques in the Libyan capital have been subjected to attacks since the beginning of October, including the (Ahmed Pasha) Al-Qara Malli Mosque, one of the most beautiful and famous mosques in Tripoli, which dates back to the 18th century AD. The statement indicated that the historic Othman Pasha School used by Sufis in Tripoli was also damaged and looted by gunmen. "I strongly condemn these recent attacks on buildings of the cultural and religious heritage of the ancient city of Tripoli," said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and called for the protection of Libya's cultural heritage in light of the current situation of more insecurity and stability.
