The Security Council renews the mandate of UNIFIL in southern Lebanon for a period of one year

New York (JUNA) - Today, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2591, which extended UNIFIL's mandate for another year. Lebanon's envoy to the United Nations, Amal Mudalli, announced in a tweet on her Twitter account: The UNIFIL mission in Lebanon has been unanimously renewed, after difficult negotiations. She thanked all members of the Security Council, especially France. The new resolution reaffirms the mandate of UNIFIL as set out in resolution 1701 (2006) and confirmed by subsequent resolutions. In Resolution 2591, for the first time, the Security Council requested UNIFIL to take temporary and special measures to support the Lebanese Armed Forces with non-lethal materials (such as food, fuel, and medicine) and logistical support for a period of six months, and this will be done within the limits of available resources, and in accordance with the due diligence policy in the field of United Nations human rights. The Council also strongly urged further and increased international support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, while stressing the need for an effective and permanent deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon. He also urged the parties to make constructive and expanded use of the tripartite mechanisms of UNIFIL, including the Subcommittee on Marking the Blue Line. While urging the parties to strictly abide by their obligations to respect the safety of UNIFIL and other United Nations personnel, the Security Council called on the parties to take all appropriate measures to enhance the safety and security of United Nations personnel and equipment, and called on the Council to expedite the completion of investigations initiated by Lebanon into all attacks against UNIFIL in order to provide The perpetrators of these attacks must be promptly brought to justice. In the resolution, the Security Council called on the parties to strengthen their efforts to fully implement all provisions of resolution 1701 (2006) without delay. It condemned all violations of the Blue Line by air and land, and strongly called on the parties to respect the cessation of hostilities, prevent violations of the Blue Line, and fully cooperate with the United Nations and UNIFIL.
