Brussels (UNA) - The European Union called on the Syrian government, today, Sunday, to stop the military escalation in Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria. The EU spokeswoman for foreign, political and security affairs, Virginie Pato Henrickson, said in a statement: The government and its allies must stop indiscriminate military attacks and respect international humanitarian law. The statement added: The latest attack launched by the Syrian army led to the death and injury of countless civilians and the displacement of 80 thousand Syrians, which increased the number of displaced persons to 800 thousand people since last February. He stressed that all parties to the Syrian conflict are obligated to protect civilians, while stressing the need to ensure the urgent entry of humanitarian aid across the borders. The statement indicated that three million Syrian civilians live in Idlib, and they must be protected and provided with relief support. He also stressed that working towards a political settlement between the Syrian government and the opposition in accordance with United Nations Resolution No. (2254) will remain a priority for the European Union.
