Brussels (UNA/WAFA) – The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, proposed suspending political dialogue with Israel over allegations that it violated human rights and international law in the Gaza Strip..
Euronews quoted European officials and diplomats as saying that Borrell first put forward his proposal during a meeting of ambassadors on Wednesday, and it is expected that he will put it forward again at the meeting of European Union foreign ministers scheduled to be held next Monday..
Borrell based his proposal on allegations of Israeli violations of human rights and international law in Gaza..
The website pointed out that the proposal requires consensus among the member states of the Union in order to be implemented, and it is unlikely that a consensus will be reached due to divisions within the Union regarding Israel and the Palestinian issue..
Mid-February/Last February, Spain and Ireland called on the European Union to conduct an urgent review of Israel’s compliance with its human rights obligations in the Gaza Strip..
“If it becomes clear that Israel is in violation of the EU-EU Association Agreement, which makes respect for human rights and democratic principles a fundamental element of their relationship,” the Commission should propose “appropriate measures for the Council to consider,” the joint letter from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar said.".
Since October 7th/October 2023, Israel, the occupying power, wages a war of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, leaving about 147 martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that killed dozens of children and the elderly, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
