
New York (UNA/WAFA) - The member states of the World Health Organization decided, last night, by an overwhelming majority, to grant additional rights to the State of Palestine, which enjoys the status of an observer state, by a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
The resolution called for granting the State of Palestine some rights, including: “the right to have a seat among member states, the right to submit proposals and amendments, and the right to be elected to the office of the plenary session and the main committees of the Health Assembly.”
The draft resolution, which was submitted by a group of Arab and Islamic countries, in addition to China, Nicaragua and Venezuela, received the support of 101 countries, while only five countries opposed it.

The General Assembly’s resolution granted Palestine “the right to sit among member states in alphabetical order and the right to register on the list of speakers within the framework of agenda items, other than items related to the issues of Palestine and the Middle East.”
It also has “the right to make statements on behalf of a group, including alongside representatives of major groups” and the right to participate in submitting and presenting proposals and amendments, including on behalf of a group, in addition to “the right to have members of the delegation of the State of Palestine elected to membership in the Assembly’s Bureau.” General Assembly and the offices of its main committees.
The resolution granted the State of Palestine the right to participate fully and effectively in United Nations conferences and international conferences and meetings held under the auspices of the General Assembly.
