Brussels (UNA/WAS) – The Quintet on Sudan, comprising the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the League of Arab States, the European Union and the United Nations, reaffirmed its continued commitment to facilitating an inclusive, Sudanese-led political dialogue aimed at ending the war and laying the foundations for a peaceful political transition.
In a statement released by the European Union ahead of the third international conference on Sudan in Berlin today, the group expressed its deep concern about the continuing deterioration of the situation inside Sudan, as the conflict enters its fourth year, noting that the continuation of hostilities is leading to increasing waves of displacement and worsening humanitarian needs, as well as threatening the stability of the region.
The group stressed the urgent need to de-escalate, reduce suffering and destruction, ensure the protection of civilians and vital infrastructure, and facilitate full, safe, rapid and sustainable humanitarian access to all those in need.
The five-member group saw the Berlin conference as an opportunity to strengthen international engagement, push for de-escalation, and amplify the voice of Sudanese civilians at a pivotal moment.
In this context, the group stressed the importance of the civilian component’s role in the conference as a platform for formulating a joint call for de-escalation and promoting a Sudanese-led political process, urging civilians to seize this opportunity to bridge differences, strengthen social cohesion, and engage constructively in preparations for a comprehensive Sudanese dialogue.
In closing, the five-member group stressed its full respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and its rejection of any attempts to undermine these principles, calling on all parties to support de-escalation efforts and create conditions for achieving lasting peace through negotiation.
