Union Newsthe world

During the 7th World Media Summit in Beijing, the Director General of UNA called for responsible media that utilizes artificial intelligence and enhances trust between peoples.

Beijing (UNA) – The Director General of the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA) of the OIC Member States, Professor Mohammed bin Abdul Rabbo Al-Yami, affirmed that the rapid development in artificial intelligence technologies imposes new responsibilities on media institutions related to maintaining credibility, confronting media misinformation, protecting cultural identity, and ensuring fair access to knowledge and technology.
Al-Yami explained, during his participation on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in the opening session of the seventh World Media Summit in the Chinese capital, Beijing, that the summit’s theme, “Media in the Smart Age: From Consensus to Action,” reflects the need to move from diagnosing challenges and agreeing on principles to launching practical initiatives and partnerships that achieve a tangible impact on the international media landscape.
He pointed out that technology has become an influential partner in the production and distribution of information, and that the rapid development of artificial intelligence has provided wide opportunities for media institutions, but in return it has created challenges related to credibility, deepfakes and the protection of cultural identity, stressing that human values and professional responsibility should remain the main guide for the future of media.
He stressed that the ability of artificial intelligence to produce content quickly does not mean that it can replace professional conscience, ethical responsibility, and sound human judgment, noting that responsible media should be based on the principles of transparency, information verification, and maintaining human editorial responsibility, which enhances the trust of societies in media institutions.
Al-Yami explained that the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) views the media as a force for rapprochement between peoples and a tool to support peace, development, and civilizational understanding. He clarified that the Union works in cooperation with news agencies and media institutions in member states to build a more integrated media system based on the exchange of information and experiences, benefiting from modern technologies, and enhancing the presence of common issues in the international media landscape.
He stressed that the diversity of cultures, languages and experiences is a source of strength that enriches global media and enhances its balance and inclusiveness, noting the importance that the Union attaches to its partnerships with international media institutions, foremost among them Xinhua News Agency, which contributes to expanding the bridges of media and cultural communication between China and the Islamic world.
He outlined three main paths for moving from consensus to action: building an international framework for responsible media in the age of artificial intelligence, based on transparency, information verification, and the preservation of human editorial responsibility; developing practical partnerships for knowledge exchange and capacity building, which prevents the widening of the technological gap between media institutions; and strengthening international media cooperation in the service of peace and development and bringing peoples closer together.
He pointed out that responsible media does not limit its role to reporting events, but extends to contributing to shaping the awareness of societies in the way they understand those events, expressing the Union’s aspiration to work with Xinhua News Agency and international partners to launch joint programs in the areas of responsible artificial intelligence, media training, content exchange, combating misinformation, and transforming the summit’s outputs into actionable and measurable programs.
Al-Yami reiterated his thanks to Xinhua News Agency and its president, Mr. Fu Hua, for organizing the summit, congratulating it on the 95th anniversary of its founding, noting its contributions to developing journalistic work and enhancing communication between peoples, expressing his hope that the summit’s work would result in practical steps that would enhance international cooperation and support more responsible, fair and sustainable media.
He stressed that the progress of civilizations is linked to the exchange of knowledge and the expansion of areas of cooperation, emphasizing the need for technological transformations to serve humanity, and for the media to remain a bridge for understanding and a platform for truth, and for its success to be measured not only by the speed at which news reaches, but also by its ability to build trust, create understanding and serve peace.
