Cairo (UNA/SPA) – Assistant Secretary-General for the Media Sector at the Arab League, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, stressed that the Palestinian issue has strongly imposed itself on the proceedings of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, with the increasing international recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people and the need to support the two-state solution.
In a statement marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Khattabi explained that the organization faces a difficult test in implementing international legitimacy resolutions, ending the war on Gaza, and curbing settlement activity in the West Bank. He emphasized that the international position has become more clear in supporting the Palestinians' right to freedom and sovereignty.
He pointed out that the Security Council's failure to halt the Israeli war on Gaza since October 2023 embodies a structural imbalance in the international system, calling for reform of the United Nations, expanding Security Council membership, and addressing the veto problem, which has obstructed essential resolutions to protect international peace and security.
