Riyadh (UNA) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), along with its international partners, is leading intensive efforts to support the implementation of its recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence, and to promote its governance and responsible use, at a crucial historical juncture for the global technology sector, especially since the concept of “artificial intelligence ethics” is no longer an organizational option, but has become a fundamental pillar and an urgent international imperative to employ these advanced technologies to serve all of humanity and protect their human gains around the world.
World leaders believe in the importance of artificial intelligence in creating great benefits for humanity. However, there are concerns that must be addressed to ensure responsibility for the use of these technologies and to address the challenges associated with them, including biases that can lead to discrimination and inequality among human societies in the world, as stated in the UNESCO recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence adopted by the organization’s member states in 2021, with the need to emphasize ensuring the safety of the processes of using artificial intelligence technologies, and preserving human dignity and rights.
UNESCO has chosen the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to host the fourth edition of the Global Forum on Artificial Intelligence Ethics 2026, from September 14 to 17, with the participation of ministers of technology and artificial intelligence from member states of the organization, policymakers, heads of major global companies and international organizations, in partnership with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and the International Center for Research and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (ICAIRE) under the auspices of UNESCO, and in coordination with the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence is one of the most prominent international events concerned with the ethics of artificial intelligence. The world awaits the outcomes of this edition, which aims to formulate transcontinental policies that ensure a fair and responsible distribution of artificial intelligence, and address concerns about the digital divide between countries, in a way that serves the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and promotes the prosperity of human societies without exception.
Over four days, the forum will discuss a number of key themes, including the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence, capacity building, responsible innovation, and international policies, in addition to reviewing the latest global initiatives and experiences in this field, through high-level sessions and specialized workshops that bring together a select group of experts and policymakers from around the world.
