
ANKARA (UNA) – In his speech at the opening session of the 13th Session of the OIC Statistical Commission, which began its work today in Ankara, Turkey, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hussein Ibrahim Taha, stressed that statistics play a vital role in making sound decisions on policy issues and in assessing the impact of social and economic policies.
He also commended the efforts of the Committee in bringing together senior statisticians from the Organization’s Member States to develop a plan of action to improve the production and dissemination of vital and reliable statistics on Member States. Dr. Ahmed Kaweesa Ssenjindu, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs, delivered the statement on behalf of the Secretary-General.
During the 2023th session, the OIC-StatCom will review the activities undertaken since the last session held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in October 2021. It will also discuss the implementation of the Commission’s work programme for the period 2025-2, issues related to comprehensive data collection in the field of social protection, ethics of data sources and new technologies, monitoring and reporting on indicators of Sustainable Development Goal 2020 (Zero Hunger), the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in official statistics, and the XNUMX round of the World Population and Housing Census Programme.
