Jeddah (UNA) – On the occasion of the International Day for Preventing Violent Extremism When It Leads to Terrorism, the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission affirms that violent extremism poses a grave threat to the right to life, the safety of communities, and international peace and security, and undermines efforts to achieve sustainable development. The Commission emphasizes that preventing violent extremism requires a comprehensive approach that addresses its root causes, including protracted conflicts, discrimination, marginalization, human rights violations, misinterpretation of religious texts, and disregard for the rule of law and human dignity.
In this context, the Commission expresses its deep concern regarding the continued loss of innocent civilian lives in the Gaza Strip and other occupied Palestinian territories, and stresses the need to protect civilians, ensure respect for international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and hold perpetrators of violations accountable.
The Authority also emphasizes the importance of investing in education, empowering youth and women, promoting social inclusion, correcting misconceptions about religion, reforming religious discourse, and establishing a culture of dialogue and tolerance, as essential tools for prevention and building more cohesive and stable societies.
The Commission renews its commitment to supporting a human rights-based approach in all efforts to prevent violent extremism and to promote international cooperation to achieve peace and justice for all.
