It consists of 14 red and white stripes, representing the 13 states and the federal government, with a blue rectangle in the corner containing a crescent and star. The crescent symbolizes Islam, and the 14-pointed star represents the union between the states. The flag was adopted on 16 September 1963 after the formation of the Federation of Malaysia.

Climate and geographic information

The two main parts of Malaysia are separated by the South China Sea. The landscape in the western and eastern parts of the country is characterised by coastal plains that often rise to form hills and mountains covered with dense forests, the highest being Mount Kinabalu at 4,095.2 metres on the island of Borneo. The local climate is tropical, characterised by southwest (April–October) and northeast (October–February) monsoons.
