Shusha (UNA) – The Director General of the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA), Professor Mohammed bin Abdulrab Al-Yami, held a meeting today, Monday, July 13, 2026, with the Minister of Information of the Syrian Arab Republic, Dr. Khaled Fawaz Zaarour, on the sidelines of the fourth edition of the Shusha Global Media Forum, held in the city of Shusha in the Republic of Azerbaijan under the theme: “The Media’s Message in Promoting Peace: Restoring Truth and Rebuilding Trust.”
During the meeting, ways to enhance media cooperation between the Syrian Ministry of Information and the Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA) were discussed, and the Union’s work plan for the next phase was reviewed in a way that keeps pace with the aspirations of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and strengthens the role of professional media in supporting development and consolidating the values of dialogue and understanding.
The Syrian Minister of Information also reviewed the transformations taking place in the Syrian Arab Republic during the transitional phase, and its path towards consolidating democratic institutions, stressing the importance of the media’s role in conveying the true image of Syria, and highlighting the efforts it is witnessing in the areas of development, reconstruction and community recovery, away from stereotypes and inaccurate information.
The meeting addressed the challenges posed by the media disinformation and misleading information campaigns targeting Syria at this stage. The possibility of launching a specialized platform to monitor and combat media disinformation related to the Syrian issue was discussed, in cooperation between UNA, media institutions and international partners, in order to contribute to enhancing the credibility of media content and providing reliable information to the public.
The minister affirmed Syria’s complete openness to press and media delegations, and its readiness to facilitate their visits and enable them to directly observe the situation on the ground, which will enhance professional and objective coverage. The two sides discussed mechanisms for cooperation in the areas of exchanging news and media content, and professional coverage of Syrian issues.
The meeting concluded by emphasizing the importance of continuing coordination between the two sides and developing joint media initiatives in the areas of media capacity building, combating misinformation, and promoting social peace through responsible media, in order to support the presence of Syrian media at the regional and international levels and serve the common goals of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
