Jeddah (UNA) – The Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA) and the Islamic Solidarity Fund signed a grant agreement today, Monday, at the Fund’s headquarters in Jeddah, to establish websites for national news agencies in a number of less developed member states.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Federation by the Director General, Mohammed bin Abdul Rabbo Al-Yami, and on behalf of the Fund by the Executive Director, Mohammed bin Suleiman Aba Al-Khail.
The agreement reflects the two parties’ shared commitment to establishing digital platforms for news agencies in 10 of the least developed countries in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in accordance with the latest technological specifications, which would enhance digital access to the media content of these agencies, increase their readability and dissemination, in addition to raising the level of news exchange between member states.
The Director General of the Union, Professor Mohammed bin Abdulrab Al-Yami, praised the important role of the Fund in financing and financially supporting this project, stressing that the Union pays great attention to promoting the electronic transformation in member news agencies, and enabling them to keep pace with the great developments witnessed by the media production industry, especially on the digital level.
For his part, the Executive Director of the Islamic Solidarity Fund, Professor Muhammad bin Sulaiman Aba Al-Khail, affirmed that the agreement is a culmination of the fruitful and effective cooperation between the Fund and the Union within the framework of common goals, noting that the Fund is interested in the media sector in its projects and assistance, in view of the pivotal role of this sector in promoting communication and understanding between Islamic peoples, and supporting the developmental and civilizational programs of member states.
This agreement comes within the framework of implementing the relevant resolutions, as the General Assembly of the Union, in its sixth session held virtually on January 27, 2025, called on the Union to work in coordination with the member states to provide a comprehensive study on the status of the digital platforms of the member news agencies, and to work on updating the websites of news agencies that face technical difficulties, especially in the least developed member states, and to mobilize the necessary technical and financial support to achieve this.
The Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers, at its fifty-first session held in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 21-22, 2025, also called on the Union to contribute to the process of developing news agency websites in the least developed member states.
