Director General of “UNA” stresses at “BRICS Media Summit” the necessity of cooperation to confront Islamophobia, hatred and media misinformation

Moscow (UNA) – The Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UNA) participated in the activities of the “BRICS Media Summit” hosted by the Russian capital, Moscow, during the period (September 13-17, 2024), with a wide international presence.

During his speech at the summit today, Saturday, the Director General of the Union, Mr. Mohammed bin Abdul Rabbo Al-Yami, explained that the summit represents a high-level event to promote cultural and media pluralism in our world, indicating that the Union was keen to enhance its cooperation with media organizations in the BRICS countries, so it signed cooperation agreements with major media institutions in Russia such as the TASS News Agency, the Sputnik News Agency and Radio, and Russia Today, and it also signed a cooperation agreement with the Union of Latin American News Agencies.

He revealed that the Union was also keen to actively engage in forums and conferences organized in BRICS countries, such as the “Russian-African Summit” in 2023, and the Kazan Forum 2023 and 2024. On the sidelines of these conferences, the Union held discussion panels, the most recent of which was the “Main Trends in the Transformation of the Information Field in the Modern World and the OIC Countries” forum, which was organized on May 15 within the framework of the “Kazan Forum 2024”, with broad participation from media institutions in the BRICS group and the OIC countries.

Al-Yami pointed out that the relationship between the Union and media organizations in the BRICS countries is based on cooperation in several areas, most notably finding a balance in the global flow of information, and building media content that takes into account and respects the spiritual and cultural values that have represented for centuries the solid foundation of our civilizations, in addition to strengthening joint action in confronting Islamophobia, hate speech, bias, and media misinformation.

He stressed that the need for this cooperation is increasing day after day, especially in light of the crises and urgent issues we are witnessing, most notably the “Palestinian issue,” which requires a humanitarian solution that leads to enabling the Palestinian people to obtain their legitimate rights, including the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. He affirmed the Union’s readiness to contribute to any initiative to enhance media cooperation between the BRICS and OIC groups, which would build bridges of dialogue and understanding and enhance peace and stability in our world.

The summit is widely attended by heads of leading BRICS media organizations, as well as media outlets from countries that have expressed interest in expanding cooperation with the group. The discussion sessions include discussions on the role of the BRICS media community in promoting stability in a multipolar world, as well as the technological aspects of information interaction among BRICS countries.
