JAKARTA (UNA) – Two volcanoes on separate islands in Indonesia erupted on Tuesday, sending ash into the sky and hot volcanic material down their slopes. Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island sent a column of ash 5000 meters into the air and spewed lava flows, a hot, fast-moving mixture of gas and molten rock, down its slopes, according to Indonesia’s Geological Disaster Research Center. There were no immediate reports of casualties from either volcano. Mount Sinabung has been erupting intermittently for years, and nine villagers were killed by hot volcanic material in 2016. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic activity, and is home to about 128 active volcanoes. (End)
