World Food Programme: Aid flow to Gaza far falls short of daily needs

Geneva (UNA/WAFA) – The World Food Programme said that supplies entering Gaza are still far below the daily target of 2000 tons.

World Food Programme data indicates that approximately 750 tons of food are now entering the Gaza Strip daily, but this is still far short of the needs after a two-year war that reduced much of the Gaza Strip to rubble.

"In order to access this amount, we must use all border crossings now," World Food Programme spokeswoman Abeer Etefa said at a press conference in Geneva on Tuesday evening.

UNICEF spokesman Ricardo Perez said the humanitarian response remains far below the required level and called for the reopening of all crossings.

"No large convoys have reached Gaza City or northern Gaza," Atifa said, adding that the World Food Programme has not been granted permission to use Salah al-Din Street, the main road connecting the northern and southern parts of the Strip.

She stated that the food supplies delivered so far are sufficient to feed about half a million people for two weeks.

“They eat part of it, economize and keep some supplies for emergencies, because they are not entirely sure how long the ceasefire will last and what will happen next,” she said.
