New York (UNA/WAFA) – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Thursday that “the US aid mechanism in the Gaza Strip will not address the worsening hunger, and the horrific Hunger Games cannot become a new reality.”
In a post on the X platform, Lazzarini considered the mechanism for distributing this aid in Gaza, outside of UN supervision, "extremely humiliating, degrading, and putting lives at risk," emphasizing that "the United Nations possesses the knowledge, experience, and community trust to provide dignified and safe assistance."
The UNRWA Commissioner-General urged that humanitarian workers be allowed to carry out their work in the Gaza Strip.
The Gaza Strip has been suffering a catastrophic humanitarian crisis since the occupation closed all crossings on March 2, preventing the entry of food, medicine, aid, and fuel.
The ongoing war of extermination, which began on October 7, 2023, has left approximately 182 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and a famine that has claimed the lives of many, including children, as well as widespread destruction of infrastructure affecting more than 75% of the Gaza Strip.
