Rome (UNA/WAFA) – The World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday that it has been unable to transport any food supplies to the Gaza Strip since March 2nd due to the Israeli occupation's closure of all border crossings to humanitarian and commercial supplies.
At the beginning of this month, Israel, the occupying power, re-closed all crossings into Gaza to prevent the entry of humanitarian aid.
The UN program explained that commercial food prices have been rising since the closure of the crossings, with the prices of some basic items such as flour, sugar, and vegetables increasing by more than 200 percent, according to the UN News website.
The program noted that some local merchants have begun withholding goods due to uncertainty about the arrival of new supplies.
He stated that he currently has sufficient food stocks to support kitchens and bakeries operating in the Strip for up to a month, in addition to ready-to-eat food parcels to support 550 people for two weeks.
The UN program said it currently supports 33 kitchens across Gaza, providing a total of 180 hot meals daily. The program also supports 25 bakeries, but on March 8, six of those bakeries were forced to close due to a shortage of cooking gas.
The program also has approximately 63 metric tons of food destined for Gaza, equivalent to two to three months' worth of food distributions for 1.1 million people, awaiting permission to enter Gaza, according to the United Nations.
The World Food Programme stated that it delivered more than 40 metric tons of food to Gaza and provided life-saving assistance to 1.3 million people during the first phase of the ceasefire, which lasted 42 days starting on January 19.
The program also provided more than $6.8 million in cash assistance to support nearly 135 people, helping families purchase much-needed supplies.
Since October 2023, 160, the Israeli occupation has been committing genocide in Gaza, leaving more than 14 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than XNUMX missing.
