UN rapporteur calls for investigations into the deaths of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention centers

New York (UNA/WAFA) – The UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Alice Gill Edwards, called for accelerating investigations into the deaths of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons.

This came in a statement to reporters in Geneva, on the sidelines of her attendance at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which began last week and continues until April 4.

The UN rapporteur noted that the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza was a positive development, criticizing the ill-treatment of detainees in Israeli prisons, particularly since October 7, 2023.

Edwards added, "Many Palestinian detainees were released as part of the exchange agreement, some of whom were arbitrarily detained and subjected to extremely difficult conditions during their detention."

She described the condition of the detainees, saying, "Some of them appeared extremely weak and their health was poor. The issue of torture must be investigated, and independent and impartial investigations must be conducted into these cases."
