Cairo (UNA) - On May 11, the League of Arab States celebrates the Day of “Global Solidarity with the Palestinian Media,” in implementation of the decision of the Council of Arab Information Ministers during its 52nd session, held in September 2022 in Cairo.
On this occasion, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communications Sector, stated that this anniversary, which coincides with the tragedy of the assassination of the Palestinian journalist on “Al-Jazeera” channel, the martyr Sherine Abu Aqleh, is an occasion to arouse the attention of international public opinion, journalistic, media and intellectual elites, and human rights bodies to the need for solidarity with the components of the media. The Palestinian is against the practices and systematic plans of the Israeli authorities aimed at obliterating the depth of the roots of the Palestinian identity, and distorting the authenticity of the Palestinian cultural and spiritual features, especially in East Jerusalem.
In this regard, Ambassador Khattabi said that the Palestinian media is exposed to the most egregious violations without the slightest regard for the rules and regulations for protecting the physical safety of journalists and media professionals while performing their professional duties in armed conflicts, including the need to treat them in accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law, in particular the requirements of Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol to the Conventions. Geneva.
Ambassador Khattabi affirmed that the Palestinian cause remains at the heart of the strategy of Arab media action, pointing out that the League of Arab States took the initiative from the first moment to commit this despicable criminal act in support of the Palestinian initiative that aims to commemorate this memory because of its symbolic load in fulfillment of the spirit of Sherine Abu Aqelah and her likes of media professionals. The Palestinians who gave their lives, with all selflessness, as a beacon and sincerity to the bond of belonging and the honesty of defending human principles and values.
