New York (UNA/SPA) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, renewed the call for justice and accountability for the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who were expelled from their homes in Myanmar by security forces in 2017.
Türk's remarks came in a statement he issued today on the sixth anniversary of a large-scale attack by the Myanmar army against the Rohingya minority, in which some 10,000 Rohingya men, women, children and newborns were killed, and more than 300 villages were burned to the ground.
Türk expressed his desire that the Rohingya be able to return to their homes to live in safety, dignity and freedom as recognized citizens of Myanmar, with their human rights fully respected.
Türk urged the international community to continue supporting the Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh, amid dwindling funding for humanitarian programs.
In turn, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrew, appealed to world leaders to take the necessary measures to hold accountable the designers and perpetrators of violence.
