Jeddah (UNA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) mission in Kabul, in cooperation with the Afghan Red Crescent Society, has launched a new humanitarian initiative aimed at providing life-saving surgeries for Afghan children with congenital heart defects.
The official launch ceremony of the initiative took place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al-Ayash, Director General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Mission, His Excellency Sheikh Shahabuddin Delawar, President of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, along with a number of officials, medical personnel, and families of the beneficiary children.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation will fund the program, which is scheduled to include surgical operations for 30 children in specialized hospitals in Kabul. The project will be implemented and monitored jointly by the organization's mission and the Afghan Red Crescent Society.
In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Dr. Al-Ayash noted that congenital heart defects remain a leading cause of child mortality in Afghanistan, particularly in remote areas with poor health services. His Excellency emphasized the importance of continuing effective partnerships to meet such urgent humanitarian needs.
This initiative embodies the OIC and the Afghan Red Crescent Society's continued commitment to supporting the health of Afghan children and strengthening the country's future through coordinated and effective humanitarian action.
