OIC Celebrates International Volunteer Day

Jeddah (UNA) – On the International Volunteer Day, which falls on December 5 of each year, the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation joins the international community in celebrating this day and seizes this occasion to reaffirm its commitment to volunteer work to develop services and promote solidarity as a principle rooted in Islamic values.

On this important occasion, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr. Hussein Ibrahim Taha, reiterated his call on Member States to encourage volunteerism in their communities with a view to advancing the objectives of the OIC Ten-Year Programme of Action (TYPOA) aimed at alleviating poverty, eradicating hunger and providing humanitarian relief. Such cooperation is crucial in coordination with other development partners and with a focus on post-conflict peacebuilding in several vital areas, such as food security, land and water resources management, micro-development projects, healthcare and education.

The OIC recognizes the contributions of volunteers around the world who dedicate their time and expertise to support various fields for the betterment of people. This is in line with the theme of this year’s International Volunteer Day “Diverse Volunteers, Stronger Communities”, which highlights the important role volunteering plays in promoting impactful programs in the fields of humanitarian assistance, education, healthcare, and environmental conservation. Volunteerism remains a vital foundation for addressing global challenges, including poverty alleviation, education advancement, and addressing the effects of climate change.
