The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meets with the President of the Senate of Uzbekistan

Tashkent (UNA) - The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Mr. Hussein Ibrahim Taha, yesterday, Friday, held a fruitful meeting with the President of the Senate (Supreme Council) of Uzbekistan, Ms. Tanzila Narbayeva, in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan.

During the meeting, the Secretary-General praised the rich cultural and scientific heritage of Uzbekistan, stressing that the OIC Tourism City Award is an acknowledgment of the efforts of the Government of Uzbekistan in developing the tourism sector and highlighting its rich history.

He expressed his appreciation for Uzbekistan's hosting of the Twelfth Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers in the city of Khiva, from May 31 to June 2, 2024, and the exceptional arrangements it witnessed.

The Secretary-General also praised the impressive development and progress in the social and economic spheres of Uzbekistan, noting its great efforts to achieve regional social and economic integration. The meeting dealt with a group of regional and global issues on the agenda of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Regarding the issue of Palestine, the Secretary-General reported on the efforts being made to stop the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, including the aggression against the city of Rafah and its environs, stressing the importance of an immediate ceasefire and the provision of adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid throughout the Strip.

Regarding Afghanistan, the Secretary-General praised Uzbekistan's role in promoting peace, security, stability and social and economic development, as well as providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

The discussion addressed the initiatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to combat the phenomenon of Islamophobia and anti-Islamic sentiments, and the importance of promoting the true principles of Islam of peace and tolerance through media communication, education and interfaith dialogue was emphasized. The Secretary-General highlighted the efforts made to empower women by enhancing their societal roles and ensuring gender equality through various programs.

The meeting also discussed social, economic and development programs that focus on poverty alleviation, education, scientific cooperation and sustainable development. Cultural cooperation was also discussed, with a focus on preserving and enhancing the rich cultural heritage of the OIC Member States through initiatives that support publications, organize exhibitions, and promote cultural exchange.

Ms. Tanzila Narbayeva expressed Uzbekistan's intense support for various OIC initiatives, highlighting active cooperation with the General Secretariat and its agencies in areas including cultural and heritage cooperation and youth and women empowerment.

This meeting underscores the strong and growing partnership between the OIC and Uzbekistan, and their shared commitment to promoting peace, development and mutual understanding in the region.
