At the request of Saudi Arabia and Iraq: an emergency meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the “Islamic Cooperation” regarding the recurring incidents of desecration and burning of copies of the Holy Qur’an in Sweden and Denmark

grandmother (UNA) - At the request of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Chairman of the Fourteenth Islamic Summit, and the Republic of Iraq, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will hold, on Monday, July 31, 2023, the eighteenth special session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of Member States, virtually, to consider the repeated incidents of desecration and burning of copies of The Holy Qur’an in Sweden and Denmark.

This emergency ministerial meeting comes in implementation of what was stated in the final statement issued by the extraordinary, open-ended meeting of the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Organization in Jeddah on July 2, 2023, regarding the burning of a copy of the Noble Qur’an in Sweden, where it called for the convening of an emergency high-level meeting when appropriate.

The meeting also comes in light of the consultations that the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha, is conducting with member states regarding the implementation of the final statement issued by the Executive Committee, and consideration of taking further measures in response to the recurrence of such provocative acts, which represent a manifestation of deliberate religious hatred and intolerance.
