Tunis (INA) – The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) announced yesterday the organization of an annual international conference on Jerusalem, in addition to launching an annual cultural award for the best individual or institutional work on Jerusalem, in cooperation with international and regional organizations working in this field. At the conclusion of the 104th regular session, the members of the organization agreed to continue providing support for Palestinian educational and cultural projects within the framework of the ALECSO budget for the year 2016. The members called on the League of Arab States to participate in organizing the (Donors Conference) and to contribute to financing from the allocations of the Somalia Support Fund. The attendees unanimously agreed to hold its 23rd conference in the State of Kuwait next May, as well as the strategic plan for the years 2017-2022. The Director General of ALECSO, Dr. Abdullah Muhareb, said in a press statement, reported by QNA, that the Palestinian issue is central to the organization, which seeks, in coordination with the National Committee for Culture in Palestine, to establish a permanent center for it in the city of Jerusalem. Muhareb added: The location of this center was chosen and the cost of setting it up, estimated at $150, was studied, explaining that ALECSO sent a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asking him to facilitate the administrative procedures for establishing this center. Muhareb stressed that ALECSO seeks to establish this cultural center in Jerusalem to take care and protect Palestinian culture with all its components in the first place, and then to form an Arab presence within the city of Jerusalem. The Executive Council of ALECSO discussed over two days issues including Jerusalem, the educational, cultural and scientific conditions in Palestine, the draft strategic plan of the organization and the draft budget.
