Paris (UNA/WAS) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned today that there has been no halt to the killing of civilians.
In his address to the French Senate, he said: “We are receiving alarming reports that the Rapid Support Forces are committing atrocities, including executions and other violations.”
He added that the Kordofan region is witnessing “clear preparations to intensify hostilities with increasing killings and destruction.”
Turk urged countries to respect the arms embargo imposed by the Security Council in Darfur, stressing that protecting civilians, ensuring access for humanitarian aid, and returning to civilian rule are the priorities.
On the other hand, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, arrived in El Geneina in West Darfur State, Sudan, to see the tragic situation there.
