Geneva (UNA/QNA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the Sudan crisis is the world’s largest displacement case, with 12 million people displaced from their homes, and explained that thousands of families continue to flee from El Fasher and Darfur.
Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said that millions of Sudanese are in dire need of assistance, that civilians and aid workers are being killed with impunity, and that sexual violence is rampant.
He called for ensuring safe access for aid, and protecting and supporting local organizations.
Sean Hughes, the World Food Programme's emergency coordinator for the Sudan crisis, described the tragic situation in Sudan as the world's largest humanitarian crisis by any measure, with some 25 million people, or half the population, facing severe hunger, and nearly five million children and mothers suffering from acute malnutrition.
