Makkah (UNA) – The Muslim World League welcomed the statements of the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, in which he affirmed that his top priority in his new position is to develop a UN plan to combat Islamophobia, with the aim of “curbing the rise of hatred against Islam and Muslims.”
In a statement issued by the League's General Secretariat, His Excellency the Secretary General and Chairman of the Muslim Scholars Association, Sheikh Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Issa, emphasized the importance of this step in light of these international circumstances, in which the world is witnessing a disturbing rise in hate speech, slogans, and methods, particularly against Islam and Muslim minorities. This is particularly true given the UN envoy's announcement that the plan will focus on "education" to dispel misunderstandings about Islam in the Western world.
His Eminence affirmed that “Islam is the religion of mercy, tolerance, justice, and peace, as evidenced by its legal texts and the conduct of our noble Master and Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - and this is how Islamic moderation has proceeded throughout its rich and extended history.” He added that “Islam is not represented by those who have deviated from its principles and values, nor by those who have distorted the meaning of its texts to justify their extremism and violence.”
His Excellency expressed his confidence in Mr. Moratinos' leadership of this urgent task, as Islamophobic rhetoric and practices are escalating around the world, posing a serious and unprecedented threat. He expressed his confidence in Mr. Moratinos's proven track record in diplomacy and international action, along with his close partnership with the Muslim World League. He emphasized the League's full support for the plan announced by the UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, along with all international efforts aimed at combating theories of hatred and religious and civilizational clashes, as well as their rhetoric and resulting practices, which threaten the peace of our world and the harmony of its societies.
