UN: More than 84 people affected by floods in Somalia

Mogadishu (UNA/WAM) – The United Nations announced that more than 84 people were affected by floods in Somalia during the past month.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated in a report issued today that flash floods caused by heavy seasonal rains have killed 17 people and affected more than 84 in several areas of Somalia since mid-April.

He explained that these floods come at a time when NGOs, often among the first responders, are facing a funding shortage that is hampering their ability to respond to emergency needs. He warned of the possibility of more rains in the coming days in southern and central Somalia.

The Horn of Africa is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, with the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events accelerating.

Somalia experienced major floods in 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people and the displacement of more than a million due to heavy rains.
