Riyadh (UNA) - The King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language launched yesterday the Arabic Language Index report, which aims to provide a comprehensive and accurate view of the reality of the Arabic language around the world, after the efforts of a group of (37) experts and data collectors, and more than (14) participants who contributed to its arbitration; to reach accurate results based on solid scientific foundations, in accordance with the best international practices in preparing linguistic indicators.
The Secretary-General of the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language, Prof. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, valued the support of His Highness the Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Academy, His Highness Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud - may God protect him - and his directives and continuous follow-up of the Academy’s initiatives and qualitative projects, noting that the (Arabic Language Index) is the result of intensive work over three years; during which it underwent several steps of: (construction, review, evaluation, and arbitration), and a large group of experts and specialists participated in it.
In his speech, Dr. Al-Washmi explained that the index is an important step in the path of the continuous efforts of the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language in serving the Arabic language and enhancing its global position; to contribute to building bridges of communication and understanding between cultures and civilizations, and to spread linguistic knowledge; in order to achieve the goals of the (Human Capacity Development) Program, one of the programs of Saudi Vision (2030), which is represented in caring for the Arabic language.
The index was built to be a guiding tool that helps decision-makers understand the reality of the Arabic language, in order to reach appropriate decisions related to it in all vital fields.
A scientific symposium was organized, entitled: “The Arabic Language Index Report,” which aimed to review the results of the index and its impact on enhancing the use of the Arabic language in various sectors, with the participation of an elite group of experts, academics, and decision-makers.
The Academy explained that this symposium comes as a continuation of the linguistic efforts in the (Arabic Language Index) project within its work in the path of planning and linguistic policy; seeking to measure the presence of the Arabic language in various fields, and to provide accurate data that supports decision-makers in improving the linguistic reality, and enhancing the presence of the Arabic language globally.
The symposium witnessed the launch of the Arabic Language Index report, which provides a comprehensive view of the performance of the Arabic language in different areas. Its results showed a comprehensive analysis of the performance of the Arabic language in (12) countries within (3) linguistic circles (Arabic, Islamic, and foreign), in addition to a sample of international organizations, and a group of horizontal indicators that measure the reality of Arabic worldwide, indicating the achievement of tangible progress in some areas, while providing recommendations to enhance the presence of the Arabic language in other areas.
The symposium program included an opening session and three scientific sessions that discussed the index’s methodology and dimensions, the impact of its results on the beneficiary sectors, in addition to discussing practical recommendations supporting the development of the linguistic reality.
The symposium concluded with a number of recommendations, including: building programs that support the growth of the percentage of Arabic speakers, the growth of its use, supporting its presence in education in general and university education in particular, supporting publishable Arabic cultural content, focusing on raising the presence of the Arabic language on the Internet, in addition to expanding support for applications and investment service platforms in the Arabic language, and other recommendations.
It is noteworthy that the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language plays a pivotal role in supporting the Arabic language and expanding the scope of its use in various fields, at the local and international levels, in order to achieve the strategic national goals in the linguistic field.
