Rome (UNA/QNA) - The World Food Programme said today that the continuation of the war in Sudan for more than 500 days is exposing half the population to severe hunger, in the first confirmed famine in the world since 2017.
This came in a post by the World Food Program on its account on the /X/ platform.
The programme explained that “there is no time to waste, and humanitarian access and funding remain critical.”
Sudan's population is about 49.5 million, according to the latest unofficial estimates.
The food and health disasters coincide with the continued suffering due to the fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, which has led to the displacement of more than 10.7 million people, according to United Nations reports, while the number of refugees abroad has reached about 2.3 million people, with children making up 50 percent of the internally displaced.
