The Saudi Media Forum discusses ways to “counter hate speech in the media”

Riyadh (UNA/SPA) - A workshop entitled “Countering Hate Speech in the Media”, within the work of the Saudi Media Forum 2024 in its third edition, discussed the role of the media, in its various means and forms, in the interaction of societies, especially with regard to hate speech and incitement to violence.

Maya Sukkar, program officer for the Arab region program “Kaysid”, stated that whenever the media is used to defend political interests or spread harmful stereotypes, this leads to the exacerbation of conflicts and the tragic consequences that harm societies.

She touched on interreligious or cultural dialogue, stressing that it is an important tool for preventing hate speech and incitement to violence, and the greatest help for societies in interacting with others and achieving sustainable public interest.

She also stressed that religious leaders are an essential element in the war against hate speech and that they must work hand in hand with governments to reject extremism and violence in all its forms and manifestations.
