The ECOWAS statement, at the conclusion of a meeting held in the Ghanaian capital, Accra yesterday, chaired by the rotating president of the Ghanaian regional assembly, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, regarding the political transition in Mali, confirmed that ECOWAS remains very concerned about the deterioration of the security situation as a result of the escalation of political uncertainty in the country. this country. The statement called on the Malian transitional authorities to intensify their efforts to improve the security situation, especially by ensuring an effective state presence in the affected areas. In the same context, the regional group called on the United Nations Multidimensional Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) to strengthen its capabilities more and more to meet the challenges of terrorism in Mali. Confirming that it will demand the United Nations Security Council to make the necessary changes to the mandate of Minusma. The statement recalled the need to respect the timetable for holding the elections scheduled for February 27, 2022. It called on the transitional authorities to work in this direction in order to ensure the speedy return to constitutional order. He also indicated that ECOWAS was informed of recent developments in Guinea, particularly the adoption of the Transitional Charter, the appointment of a civilian Prime Minister and the formation of the Transitional Government. The statement urged the transitional authorities to quickly present a detailed schedule of what will be done in the context of the transition to holding elections in accordance with the decisions of the extraordinary summit of the heads of state of the group on September 16.
